Okay, so your planing on making a SvenCoop map? Well here some tips you should follow in-order to
have a half decent map.

1. Things you should realize:
? ?- Not everyone has a power house computer, keep minimal entitys in the players view distance. (Wide open areas with 20+ monsters is gonna feel like 10fps)
? ?- R_SPEEDS! Don't know what they are? Don't map until you fully understand them: http://www.karljones.com/halflife/r_speeds.asp

2. Brush work/Detail:
? ?- There's a few maps out there that make me feel like i'm playing in a world full of legos. The first thing to a great map is the brush work, it's how well you can make shapes and the detail of walls/platforms and such.
? ? ? Add minor detail to angled walls, don't make doors or hallways too big or small.
? ?

3. Entites:
? ?- Monsters: If you have a huge wave of grunts at the end of your map, don't keep them spawned. Use the "monster_maker" entity. Idle monsters are being rendered for pointless reasons, if your not attacking them yet.
? ? ?Use waypoints : Get those monsters moving, don't have a plain map were they just sit there waiting to be seen.
? ?- Teleports: Add a "trigger_push" or something similar at a teleport destination so if two users teleport at exact times, they will be pushed instead of being stuck.
? ?- Good choice of weapons, if there's a million zombies you don't wanna give the user only a glock.

3. Final tips:
? ? - Always save and compile frequently, you may encounter a leak in the map and have no idea were to find it.

Depends, there's FPS lag or Network lag.

What causes what?

FPS Lag:
There are very few things that actually cause this, the ones that should matter are:
- Fullbright map (Compiling the map without lights EX: Vis/Rad)
- Large amount of entitys in a small, or to large of a area (Again, this can be fixed by delayed monster spawns)
- Bad/Mis-Shapen brushs. If you use the Vertex tool wrong, or carve a large object it could cause FPS lag, and increase r_Speeds.
(Try to never carve objects, it's a pain the the ass)

Network Lag:
There's not much a map can do to cause network lag. Only to many entitys can really do any harm.

Another tip

Another great tip (something I have been guilty of not using in the past) is to utilize teleports or switching on/off of respawn points. This is especially needed if you have a huge map and you don't want to make players run through the entire map to get back to the action. This is particularly needed when there is some hideous obstacle that players have to pass somewhere in the map. Nothing is more frustrating than spawning back at the beginning of a huge map only to make it to the same hard obstacle that if unsuccessfully passed leads to instant death.

If you're using worldcraft/hammer you just add the WAD within the configuration thingy..

Tools -> Options -> Textures.

Re: Making a map? LOOK HERE!

I just want to point out that this is a great set of tips. I've done some map making for counter-strike just for fun and these would definitely have helped me out if I had them. In truth, these can be applied to any mod for half-life.

A few tutorial sites I've visited have lists of several programs you can use, although I can't tell from experience which ones are the best and which ones aren't. I haven't spent a whole lot of time with mapping, and my life has been too crazy as of late for me to play around with it. Hopefully, once things start to calm down, I can be of more assistance (and possibly make some great maps).

Anyway, here are some links:
http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.p ... 1-02062100
http://www.vlatitude.com/files.php
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, for people looking to map for source, I'll post some links that I've found helpful for that:
http://www.interlopers.net/index.php?page=tutorials.php
http://www.editlife.net/tutorial.php
http://www.iwannamap.com/index.php

The editlife link has a very good, and in-depth tutorial to help you get started. It begins with installing the source SDK, and walks you through setting it up and making your first map. If you're as completly clueless as I was, I recommend starting there. (I still feel a bit clueless, but at least I can make square rooms now :? )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few obeservations/tips I want to make from a players standpoint aswell (for Sven Coop):
1. Add some variety- Not only in architecture, but monsters and gameplay as well. No one wants to fight the same monsters in the same looking hallways achieving seemingly similular objectives for too long. Halo is about the only game that will ever get away with
